Calling all bookworms, if you feel like the existing bookstores in our country aren’t enough, then this is for you!

One of the largest bookstore chains in Taiwan, Eslite, is headed to Malaysia with its first megastore in The Starhill, Kuala Lumpur. As of now, no tentative opening date has been confirmed for the store but the bookstore is scheduled to open sometime in 2022.

According to Inside Retail, the 70,191 square feet bookstore will occupy the entire first floor of the centre, and will also feature a hub for contemporary Taiwanese culture and creativity. In the meantime, the megastore will also be divided into a few different areas,

  • A bookstore
  • An art venue
  • A cafe

A wide selection of books in Chinese, English, Japanese and Malay will also be available for the bibliophiles to choose from. Aside from its decorations, Eslite is also well known for providing high-quality books and a large portion of them are imported from Europe and the United States. Book lovers are sure to love the tranquil vibes, reported Klook.

Joseph Yeoh, the Vice President of YTL Land & Development, which is also the operator for The Starhill highlighted this as a meaningful partnership.

“The partnership illustrates a connection between two family businesses with a rich heritage and passion for education and knowledge as drivers of change.”

He also viewed this as a pathway for a deeper cultural exchange between Malaysia and Taiwan through retail experiences. Additionally, the Eslite flagship will also include a street-fronting F&B outlet on the Ground Level, which will be a dedicated area for creative events and programmes.

Mercy Wu, the chairperson of Eslite Group hopes to promote exchanges and interaction involving the Asian publications and the cultural and creative content through the soon-to-be-opened store in Kuala Lumpur.

Mercy Wu

Malaysia is an exciting country, with its own characteristic design aesthetics and cultural creativity,” she further added, while expressing her excitement in seeing the integration of the multi-ethnic and cross-cultural characteristics of Southeast Asia.

Eslite was founded in 1989 and currently has 43 existing stores across Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Japan. The Kuala Lumpur outlet will mark its first branch in Southeast Asia. One of the outlets in Taiwan is even operating 24/7!

We certainly can’t wait to visit Eslite once it’s opened in The Starhill. You can also visit their Instagram account for more information.
