If you have followed the news, you would know that Malaysia qualified for the 2023 Asian Cup on Tuesday after beating Bangladesh 4-1 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The atmosphere was emotional and electrifying as supporters cheered and roared for their respective countries’ teams.

This includes a large group of Bangladeshi nationals who turned up at the stadium, making for a huge Bangladeshi ‘away’ section (where supporters of the visiting team sit at).

Netizens make racist remarks

However, some Malaysian netizens were not supportive of the Bangladeshi crowd.

They made ugly remarks about the Bangladeshi supporters that were not even about sports. They mocked the Bangladeshis by saying that they would stink up the stadium with their body odour because there were so many of them there.

Other insensitive remarks include, “If they missed it (home) so much, just go back there!”, and “Wah! Be careful; Bangladeshis will be the majority population in KL soon… it’s scary.”

“Why is it that there are so many of them, but the police are not here to detain them… some will get caught… they’re illegal migrants.”

Not all Malaysians are bad

Nonetheless, there were still plenty of Malaysians who were happy for the Bangladeshis.

One netizen said it was amazing to see the Bangladeshis coming together with their fellow compatriots in the name of sports.

“For many of them, this is one of the very few opportunities to hold on to that homeland connection,” he said.

Other Malaysians on Twitter also felt happy for the Bangladeshis for being able to take a break from their work to enjoy themselves.

“Football unites… that is why football is the no. 1 sport in the world… thank you to the inventor of this beautiful sport.”

One netizen also told WORLD OF BUZZ that everyone was very welcoming when about 10-20 Bangladeshis went to sit with the Malaysian home section.

“They even shared their food with the Bangladeshis and apologised for Malaysia’s win over Bangladesh. This shows that Malaysians still empathize with the Bangladeshis despite being in the home fans section. It was heartwarming to see,” she said.

Isn’t it time that we start treating each other with more kindness? What do you think?
