Abby Choi’s murder in Hong Kong and its brutality have reminded us that even our country is not spared from horrific cases like this. Are you ready to dive into 3 of the dismemberment cases that took place in Malaysia in the last 30 years?
Let’s begin with arguably the most infamous dismemberment case which was carried out by Mona Fendi, which some of you, especially those born in the ’80s and ’90s may be familiar with.
Mona Fendi, The Witch Doctor (1993)
Originally a pop singer, Mona decided to change her career and started to learn black magic in Indonesia. The case involved the murder of a fellow politician, Datuk Mazlan in 1993.
He wanted a stronger and more stable position in his political career, so he looked no further than to seek the help of Mona. After promising some properties as part of the payment, Mona agreed to help Datuk Mazlan, and he attended a “cleansing” ritual on one of the nights, which sealed his fate forever.
Mazlan was asked to lie down and close his eyes while the money “fell from the sky,” but an axe “fell” on him instead. Datuk Mazlan was dismembered into 18 parts and his body parts were found buried in the grounds of an incomplete property which he owned in Raub, Pahang weeks later.
Mona and her accomplices – Affendi and Juraimi, who was her husband and assistant, respectively, were caught by the police after they withdrew RM315,000 from Mazlan’s account, and went on a shopping spree in Pahang and KL. The trio pleaded NOT guilty, and they were sentenced to death by hanging, which was carried out on November 2001, according to BBC News.
The case loosely inspired a 2018 film, Dukun.
Lily Chua, the pub singer (1993)
Who knew the same year Mona Fendi committed her crime, there was another dismemberment case which happened in Bukit Tunku, KL?
Lily Chua has been in a relationship with Gan Wei Seng, an ex-pastor turned music teacher who killed Lily in an argument. Gan confessed to the police about the murder and led them to the murder weapon that he used – a knife that he used to stab Lily in the chest, before dismembering her into 11 parts.
Feminine reported that Gan thoroughly cleaned the body parts before he placed them in bag trash bags and threw them just a couple of kilometers away from the crime scene in Jalan Bukit Tunku.
The bags were discovered by a street cleaner who then contacted the police. It took the authorities a long time to identify the identity of Lily as they did not have proper equipment back then, not to mention how disfigured Lily’s head had become.
Gan was charged with manslaughter and was sentenced to prison. He was released in 2000 when he returned to his family and changed his name to begin a new life.
Dismembered mother (2022)
One of the most recent dismemberment cases took place in Parit Buntar, Perak just last year when a son decided to chop his mother into 15 pieces.
He was unhappy with how his mother wanted to handle the property distribution.
The mother, Wong, and son got into an argument, and that was unfortunately their last quarrel when the son attacked her on her head before dismembering her body. Conveniently, he threw his mother’s dismembered corpse into the septic tank just behind their house, as reported by Oriental Daily.
The police managed to retrieve all the body parts and according to reports, police said that the son is mentally ill, but he had no criminal records. The police also revealed that the killer stopped taking his medication 20 years ago.
He used a machete and 2 small knives to conduct the gruesome murder and was been detained by the police. Kwong Wah reported that Wong’s husband passed away more than 10 years ago and she had been living with her 43-year-old son since then.
These are only 3 of the dismemberment cases that happened in our country in the last 30 years. It’s heartbreaking and scary to see how such gruesome murders can happen to anyone, even family members. What are the other dismemberment or horrific cases that come to your mind? Do share with us!
