While others are celebrating the festive season in their hometowns with their families, a differently-abled Malaysian man is taking Hari Raya to new heights.
And by new heights, we mean the tallest mountain in the world!
According to a report by Harian Metro, 33-year-old Muhammad Hawari Hashim celebrated Hari Raya at the Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Kathmandu.
Despite being outside of Malaysia, he managed to get a taste of home with rendang, briyani and banana chips that he had brought with him.
“It’s also sad because at this time, it’s been 2 years since I celebrated with my family. It’s because last year, I celebrated here (in Nepal). However, Aidilfitri still needs to be celebrated because it is our victory day as Muslims.”
“So, even though I am here, I don’t want to miss celebrating Aidilfitri and fortunately, I can bring food from Malaysia except for the goat that was bought here. It’s just that I didn’t have time to perform the Aidilfitri Sunat prayer as there was training in the Khumbu Ice Fall,” he shared.
Though, thankfully, he managed to have a video call with his family.
“Whenever there is an opportunity, I will steal some time to contact my family. Despite celebrating Aidilfitri a day late here, I still contacted my family in Malaysia when they celebrated 1 Syawal. I miss them a lot, especially my children and wife, but this mission needs to continue,” he added.
Muhammad Hawari is part of the Malaysian Everest 2023 (ME 2023) mission, along with the Chief of the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM) Kedah Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub, and entrepreneur who is also a fan of extreme activities Tiong Ling Yang and Azim Afif Ishak as the head of the ME 2023 mission.
The ME 2023 mission will be held until June 2 and has the support of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS).
