Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently announced the dissolution of Parliament which means that a general election is coming very soon.
The sudden announcement was not very well met by Malaysians and politicians alike who criticised the government’s decision to hold a general election during the flooding or monsoon season.
Some even claimed that having the election during this period would make their chances even better and would be extremely advantageous for those who were in power.
Recently, DAP deputy secretary-general Liew Chin Tong took to Twitter to condemn Ismail Sabri for deciding to have a general election in the coming months.
In his post, Liew said that, “Barisan Nasional is calling a general election during flood season because they do not want Malaysians to come out to vote, just like how they set polling day on a Wednesday in GE14.”
“Voter turnout will determine the outcome of GE15. In the 2018 election, there were 14.9 million voters, of whom 12.9 million turned out to vote.”
“This election, because of UNDI18 and also the automatic registration of voters, we now have 21.1 million voters. BN decided to have the election during the flood season because they don’t want many people to vote,” he said.
He then compared it to GE14 where they had weirdly set voting day on a Wednesday, in hopes that people would be more reluctant to vote.

Do you agree with his statements? Would the flood season play a major factor in voter turnout?
