Celebrity preacher Ustaz Azhar Idrus is renowned for his hot and controversial takes, such as when he criticised Malaysian Muslims for helping out to clean other places of worship.

He has recently found himself in the headlines again after he claimed that women who want a divorce from their husbands without a good reason will be forbidden from going to heaven.

In one of his sermons that has gone viral on social media, Azhar said that such women are of poor character.

“The Prophet said, any wife who asks for a divorce from her husband without any fault or wrongdoing, then paradise is forbidden for such a woman.”

“Even before the divorce is finalised, just asking for a divorce closes the gates of paradise. Many wives who ask for a divorce have poor character,” he explained.

The Terengganu-born preacher also listed several situations or reasons that allow a wife to separate from her husband.

“A wife can ask for a divorce for five reasons. Number one, the husband does not provide financial support. Number two, the husband prevents her from fulfilling obligatory duties, such as praying or covering her aurat.”

“Number three, the husband asks her to do forbidden things, such as sodomy, gambling, drinking alcohol, and so on. Number four, the husband abuses her, and number five, the husband is imprisoned,” he said.

Meanwhile, Azhar also advised wives to remain patient in facing trials and challenges in a marriage.
