Relationships being broken off after disputes over unwanted gifts are not unheard of, but seeing one such break-up unfold online is quite a sight, kan? Well, that’s exactly what happened to content creator and comedian Mark O’dea recently.

Behind the drama

The drama started with a series of Instagram stories that quickly gained traction among netizens, where Mark asked followers if they had ever broken up with their partner over a gift they bought them.

He later uploaded a video which provided even more context on what led to his current predicament. In it, Mark recorded himself surprising his girlfriend, Joanne, with some gifts, one of them being a knock-off ‘Labubu’ collectible. Joanne became upset at this as she wanted an authentic Labubu toy and things quickly went southward, with Joanne threatening to “find someone who will buy [her] a Labubu.”

In the aftermath of the video, netizens who caught up with the drama were left wondering if that was a real break-up and finding the notion that anyone would just break up with their partner over a knock-off gift ridiculous.

Others chimed in wondering what a ‘Labubu’ even is and what the hype is about, further questioning if the ‘Labubu’ toy is even worth breaking up your relationship over.

Goodbye loyalty, hello ‘lowyalty’

As suspense built up over Mark’s Instagram stories, he posted a final video on the drama. “I never have enough money to belanja my girlfriend,” he said. “Because I’m always wasting money on the same shopping platforms and I don’t try hard enough to look for the best savings!” With all this in mind, Mark resolved to become “a new man”.

In that same video, Joanne is impressed by his new resolve and returns to him. However, she was expecting to receive an authentic Labubu gift from the reformed Mark but got a large, handmade DIY love card instead. Visibly upset, Joanne broke up with Mark on camera (again).

But SURPRISE, it turns out that the whole drama was just a stunt as Mark revealed the catch behind the online “drama” with his girlfriend: the #LowyaltyEra Challenge!
