To prove a point, a 32-year-old man in Sarawak deliberately got himself arrested by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

He did so by smashing the rear window of a PDRM truck with a hammer.

Incident at the Bau District Police Headquarters

The incident occurred at approximately 1 PM on Saturday (14 March) in the car park of the Bau District Police Headquarters. According to Bau District Police Chief Mohamad Haide Bin A. Rahman, the suspect rode a motorcycle into the police compound before carrying out the act.

In a statement, Mohamad Haide said the man produced a hammer from his waistband and walked towards a police pick-up truck parked near the traffic police office building. He then repeatedly struck the left rear window of the vehicle, shattering the glass.

Swift arrest

The suspect’s actions were quickly spotted by officers nearby. Police personnel immediately moved in and, with assistance from other officers at the station, arrested the man.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect claimed he had been the subject of rumours in his village. Some villagers allegedly accused him of being a police informant who reported drug-related activities taking place in the kampung.

Upset by the accusations and eager to prove he was not cooperating with the authorities, the man allegedly decided to deliberately damage police property. His goal was to be arrested to demonstrate to villagers that he was not an undercover informant.

History of hallucinations

After carrying out the act, the suspect reportedly asked police officers to arrest him. During the incident, he suffered cuts to his fingers from the broken glass and was later sent to the hospital for treatment. A urine test subsequently came back negative for illicit substances.

In his statement, Mohamad Haide also pointed out that the suspect claimed he had been hallucinating for years about being monitored and investigated by PDRM.

Police are currently investigating the case under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967 and Section 427 of the Penal Code.
