Nilai Memorial Park Issues Statement as 30 Cremation Urns Go Missing & Reportedly Held for Ransom

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is currently investigating a case of theft and extortion involving 30 cremation urns at a memorial park in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

Nilai District Police Chief Superintendent Johari Yahya shared that the suspect contacted the memorial park management, claiming to have found the missing ashes and demanding payment for their return.

Official statement from the memorial park

The memorial park, Xiao En Memorial Park, released a statement on its website regarding the incident.

They wrote: “Upon receiving the relevant information, we immediately initiated an internal investigation and discovered that some urns could not be located in their original niche compartments. We promptly lodged a police report.”

“We have also completed direct outreach to all affected families personally, informing them of the current situation and providing the necessary support and assistance, including accompaniment for police report lodgement and subsequent coordination. We will continue to support each family with the utmost confidentiality and respect.”

They added that the police have classified this case as a criminal matter and that they will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

 

Reviewing security measures

Xiao En Memorial Park went on to ensure that they are taking this matter seriously and are looking into strengthening their security measures.

“We understand the concerns and unease among the affected families and the public, and we deeply regret the distress this may cause. We have since taken various actions addressing the incident and conducted a comprehensive review of all relevant processes to safeguard the families’ interests.”

“We will approach and manage this incident with the utmost seriousness and accountability, fully cooperating with the police in locating the missing urns and closely monitoring further developments. At the same time, we have begun reviewing security measures at the Park and will strengthen them where necessary,” they added.
