Yesterday morning, a tragic accident took place in Kulai, Johor, when a 53-year-old motorcyclist was flung into the air and landed on the slow lane of km26.9 of the north-south expressway (NSE), and was believed to have been killed upon impact.
His body was then run over by oncoming vehicles, mangling and splitting his body open. Passersby recorded videos and took photos of the man’s body, which went viral on social media yesterday.
Initial checks revealed that he tried to avoid a collision with a car that was on the fast lane, according to Kulai district police chief Superintendant Razak Md Said. However, in doing so, he crashed into the back of the car and was flung into the air, landing on the slow lane.
“Several oncoming vehicles, which we are still identifying, ran over the victim,” said Razak.
The man, identified as Mohd Halmi Haroon, actually intended to sell his BMW superbike online, but could not find anyone interested to buy it from him, that was until a friend informed him of a potential customer from Johor Bahru who was interested in the bike, reported the New Straits Times.
Halmi was meant to meet with the buyer yesterday morning and rode the same bike from his home in Batu Pahat. Unfortunately, he never made it.
His family received a call from the police about 30 minutes after the horrific accident occurred. They immediately rushed to Kulai upon hearing the tragic news.
As if their grief wasn’t bad enough, they soon discovered the viral videos and photos of Halmi’s mangled body circulating online. Needless to say, they were even more distraught upon looking at them.
Halmi’s 20-year-old daughter, Aliya, begged the public to stop spreading the gruesome images and videos online, telling the daily,
“I hope the photos could be taken off from any social media platform as it is too personal for the family.”
The 53-year-old’s remains have since been collected from the mortuary by his family and will be buried later today.
We urge everyone to respect the family’s wishes and stop circulating the photos and videos of Halmi’s accident. The last thing this family needs is more heartache.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family.
