Recently, a video by TikTok user, Indah Nur, had gone viral after she pointed out that there was a stall at the Setia Alam Pasar Malam in Shah Alam, selling pork dishes.
She wrote, “Selling pork openly at the Setia Alam Pasar Malam when this pasar malam includes Muslim vendors and also Muslim visitors.”
However, many took to her post to point out that the night market allegedly has 2 sections, a Halal and a non-Halal one, and questioned whether she had accidentally walked into the non-Halal section.
“The Setia Alam Pasar Malam has 2 parts, a non-Halal section and a Halal section.”
“But isn’t this place divided into 2? One side for non-Muslims and the other for Muslims?”
“I think this sister entered the wrong area. There are 2 spaces there, non-Halal and Halal. Even I entered the wrong section the other day, turns out there are 2 sections.”
Setting the record straight
Now, the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is setting the record straight by clarifying that non-Halal food items cannot be sold at night markets under its jurisdiction.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the Head of Corporate and Public Relations for MBSA, Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif, shared that the sale of pork is not allowed in open spaces, especially at night markets, adding that this condition is also for other non-Halal food items stated in MBSA night market guidelines.
“MBSA did not issue any permission or license for this purpose. It is possible that these traders are selling without a license. The licensing department is reviewing this matter. If the vendor has a license, their license will be revoked,”
“If there is no license, MBSA will issue a compound under the hawker bylaws,” he said while explaining that the sale of pork is only allowed in designated areas and closed markets.
