The number of road accidents in Malaysia is so high that no one is immune to becoming a victim.

Not even someone with status or authority like a VIP or a fireman, because accidents, as the definition of the word suggests, are unexpected and unintentional.

Yesterday, a clash between a luxury MPV car, a Toyota Vellfire believed to be carrying some VIPs, and a fireman riding a motorcycle almost ended the latter’s life.

The Vellfire was believed to be escorted by a police car at the incident that occurred at a junction at Jalan Tengku Mizan, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

Based on a 1 minute 6 second video that went viral on social media, the fireman can be seen crossing the junction even though the traffic light was red.

This caused the Vellfire who was in the moving lane to accidentally crash into the fireman who was not supposed to be there.

However, according to Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Md. Din, the accident was caused by a misunderstanding involving the traffic controller at the traffic light.

The fireman moved forward in spite of the red traffic light as he was under the impression that the traffic controller allowed him to cross.

Thankfully, the Vellfire did not seem to be moving quickly and the fireman suffered only minor injuries.

While it was unfortunate that the fireman was injured, this accident shows us that driving at safe speeds can make a world of difference should an accident happen. It is a matter of life and death.
