If you’re a fan of animated movies, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard of Studio Ghibli. Known for classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, Studio Ghibli’s movies are beloved not just for their stories but also for their unforgettable music, mostly composed by legendary composer, Joe Hisaishi. So, it’s no surprise that the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s (MPO) Studio Ghibli-themed symphony was a sold-out event.
On 15 and 16 November, fans packed Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) for Symphonic Ghibli, an enchanting musical tribute. The MPO brought Joe Hisaishi’s iconic scores to life, delivering a magical experience that captivated the audience. Led by resident conductor, Gerard Salonga, the evening opened with ‘Merry-Go-Round of Life’ from Howl’s Moving Castle, a piece that transitioned from delicate piano notes before it built up to a grand crescendo. This magical introduction set the tone for a night filled with nostalgic melodies. The night continued with ‘Princess Mononoke’ from Princess Mononoke. Its commanding arrangement captured the film’s themes of the relationship between humans with nature, leaving a powerful impression on the audience.
One of Studio Ghibli’s beloved animations, Kiki’s Delivery Service, delivered upbeat tracks like ‘A Town with an Ocean View’ and ‘The Baker’s Assistant – Starting the Job’, reflecting the spirited adventures of the young witch, Kiki. Fans of Spirited Away were especially thrilled by ‘One Summer’s Day’, the concert’s most iconic piece. Its bittersweet piano melodies perfectly conveyed Chihiro’s emotional and unforgettable journey in the film.
The concert also featured timeless pieces from My Neighbor Totoro. Charming tracks like ‘Stroll’ featured soothing piano notes and the uplifting ‘Ending Theme’ perfectly captured the joy and innocence of childhood of Satsuki and Mei.
From action-packed pieces like ‘Carrying You’ from Laputa: Castle in the Sky to the reflective ‘Requiem’ from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the concert struck a perfect balance between excitement and emotion. The MPO’s passion and precision shone in every piece, delivering an unforgettable performance.
The MPO’s Symphonic Ghibli concert wasn’t just a musical performance—it was an emotional journey. For fans of Ghibli and lovers of orchestral music, it was a dream come true, proving that Hisaishi’s melodies are as timeless and enchanting as the films they accompany.
