The tragic attack on the Ulu Tiram police station that happened on May 17 has since shocked the nation and neighbouring countries.

Called one of Malaysia’s darkest moments, BERNAMA reported that a lone wolf attacked the station in the early hours, around 2:30am.

The attacker killed 2 policemen

The 21-year-old attacker went to the station with a machete, killing 2 policemen, Corporal Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar and Corporal Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, while Sergeant Mohd Hasif Roslan was injured. The suspect was fatally shot at the scene.

The attacker was thought to be linked to the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group, but Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail later clarified that he had no ties to any group.

“Police investigations revealed that the attacker acted alone,” the police said after interviewing 46 people to help with the investigation.

The attacker’s dad was involved with the terrorist group

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain clarified that the earlier link to JI was due to the suspect’s dad being involved with the terrorist group.

After the incident, 5 of the suspect’s family members were arrested and charged with terrorism-related offences.

At the same time, operations in Kelantan, Johor, Penang, and Selangor led to the arrest of 8 individuals suspected of having ties to extremism and Daesh radicalism.

Police station gates will be closed after 10pm

In response, quick action was taken to boost security at police stations across Malaysia, including adding CCTV cameras and floodlights in key spots.

As a precaution, Saifuddin Nasution announced that all police station gates would be closed after 10pm to prevent potential threats from happening again.

Moreover, countries like Singapore and Indonesia have also tightened security and issued travel advisories for Malaysia following the attack.

To honour the late Ahmad Azza Fahmi and Muhamad Syafiq for their service and sacrifice, they were posthumously promoted to Corporal, while 3 other officers involved in the incident received field promotions.
