So, some of you may have heard of this stall in Ampang called Pau Pak Ngah, that’s known for selling some pretty unconventional paus.

Recently, they came out with some pretty unique, fusion paus, which are the Bolognese and Carbonara filled-paus!

Of course, we had to try them along with a few of their other paus for ourselves to see if they were really worth the hype. So, here are our first impressions!

1. Beef Rendang Pau

This is definitely one of the more interesting pau fillings Pau Pak Ngah has to offer, and they’re pretty generous when it comes to their fillings for this particular pau too!

Although we personally prefer our beef rendang with a side of rice or lemang, we’re pretty intrigued with the pau version.

Our rating: 3/5

2. Chicken Curry Pau

Personally, we felt like this particular pau tasted like a curry puff, minus the puff. The mildly spicy curry filling comprised potatoes and chicken pieces, which surprisingly, goes pretty well with the pau, although we could do with a little more filling!

Our rating: 2/5

3. Beef Curry Pau

This pau has to be one of our favourites out of the bunch. Despite the meat being a tad chewy, it makes up for that with its spiciness.

However, we still prefer our beef curry with rice instead of its pau incarnation. Still worth a try if you’re curious, though!

Our rating: 3.5/5

4. Beef Bolognese Pau

So, one of the stall’s highlights is their newest Beef Bolognese Pau, which definitely sounds out of the ordinary, and an intriguing fusion food for adventurous foodies!

Although we love the idea of this, we think it could do better with a lot more filling. The Bolognese itself tastes pretty good, with its usual blend of herbs, tomato sauce, and ground beef, but we’re not too wild about this pau version for some reason.

Our rating: 2.5/5

5. Chicken Carbonara Pau

We love the concept of this, but like the Beef Bolognese Pau, we felt that they were very sparing when it came to the filling! Someone needs to adjust the ratio, stat!

Despite its name, the pau did not have much carbonara sauce to begin with, and only had few pieces of chicken and a little mushroom in the pastry. Plus, the carbonara tasted more like garlic butter to us!

Our rating: 1.5/5

Overall, we’d suggest skipping the Chicken Carbonara and Chicken Curry Paus. Granted, we did tapau these buns and ate them in the office, so they might taste a lot better when they’re fresh out of the steamer.

However, we definitely recommend that you try out the Beef Rendang Pau. The Beef Bolognese is worth a shot too, if you’re feeling adventurous, but we think it doesn’t really live up to the hype.

Here’s where you can check them out if you wanna try some of the paus for yourselves:

Address: Pau Pak Ngah, Medan Bukit Indah 1, Taman Bukit Indah Ampang, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 2pm – 10pm (Closed on Saturdays)

If you do get to try any of these paus out, let us know what you think! Happy eating, foodies!
