The monsoon season is approaching and nothing speaks louder to Malaysians than comfort food.

Admit it, anything and everything we do revolves around food – our majlis-majlis will always be filled with a buffet spread, we lepak at mamak stalls all the time, and we often belanja people food.

Now that the rainy season is coming back again, we can expect plenty of cold and wet days in the next few weeks. Of course, we can always rely on our awesome Malaysian food for comfort during this cosy weather.

I mean, check out this hearty list of comfort food; I’m sure you’re tempted to have your favourites right now even if it isn’t raining yet!

1. Steamboat

Nothing warms the soul like a hot pot of boiling soup containing various meats and seafood. The best part about steamboat is that it’s meant to be shared so you will have to meet up with all your friends to enjoy it. 😉

2. Milo

Malaysia’s no. 1 favourite chocolate malt drink is none other than MILO. This has been everyone’s favourite since young!

Aside from just making it into a drink, we usually get very creative by topping our breads with the powder, or adding a dash of it into our Maggi curry soup to give it that extra ‘oomph’! Milo dinosaur is still the best tho.

3. Maggi soup with egg

If you prefer a piping-hot bowl of soup and noodles that’s more budget-friendly, then this is for you. Of course, to make it all the more delicious, just pop an egg in!

Oily, peppery, and spicy. You can’t get anything better than some mutton soup on a cold, rainy day. I’m craving for some already…

5. Bak kut teh

Have you ever had bak kut teh on a cold day? No? Well, it’s time you do so because this herbal pork dish could not taste better anytime else.

11. Banana leaf rice

Eating from a plate or bowl is so overrated nowadays. It’s all about going back to nature and rediscovering cultures these days. Thus, there is no better way to learn about someone’s culture than through their food!

12. Nasi lemak

Nasi lemak is the king of all dishes in Malaysia. This fatty goodness can be consumed anytime of the day because who can actually say no to it? Best of all, the spicy sambal and steaming hot rice will guide anyone to a food stupor.

Next thing you know, you’re in food coma wonderland while the rain drums away on our roofs. Bliss.

13. Porridge

Porridge is a typical dish we eat when we’re sick because a bowl of this usually contains all the carbs, protein and vegetables we need. Besides, the watery texture makes it so smooth to swallow.

Eating this can easily heal our soul!

14. Claypot yee mee soup

The sensational sound of the sizzle alone is a spiritual remedy to anyone who needs an instant pick-me-up.

Roti canai is every Malaysian’s staple, but flooding it with dhal, curry and sambal brings the dish to an all-new level of comfort food. If you’ve never tried this, then you’re missing out a chunk of your life.
