The dog meat trade has always been a controversial issue especially in countries like China, Philippines, and Vietnam, but little do we know that this heinous activity has been taking place right in our own backyard for years!

Just yesterday, a man was arrested in Sibu, Sarawak for allegedly selling dog meat at his food stall along Jalan Rambutan, according to The Star.

The raid which took place at 2.35pm on Tuesday was a collaboration between the police, Sibu Municipal Council and State Veterinary Department.

The 54-year-old man admitted to his crime of illegally running the food stall, which he also used as a slaughterhouse.

In fact, he has been doing this for over 30 years and his customers were regulars who enjoyed his food!

Am I the only one wondering when he started selling the dog meat and where he got these dogs from?

The frozen dog meat was confiscated and is currently being examined at a lab. The raid was carried out by the authorities following an outbreak of rabies in Serian.

According to One Green Planet, the consumption of dog meat greatly contributes to the spreading of rabies, especially during the process of sourcing, slaughtering and selling dog meat.

The rabies virus is extremely deadly and is fatal once symptoms begin to show, according to NY Times. The symptoms include drooling, loss of muscle function, numbness, tingling, restlessness and a mild fever. So, if you’re working in a high risk area, you may need to get vaccinated!

Let’s hope our government will intensify the crackdown on the dog meat trade to curb the current rabies outbreak.
