Identity theft happens to anyone, and we really mean ANYONE. Last year, a scammer disguised as politician Zahid Hamidi, and asked victims to transfer an amount of RM5,000. In another case, a different scammer had the audacity to pretend to be the Queen of Malaysia in an attempt to trick his victims.
This time, local content creator Arwind Kumar became the victim of identity theft on Tinder, the dating application.
He was informed by one of his friends about the identity theft and he decided to check out the Tinder profile that used his images without his consent, and his response was hilarious.
“Someone created a profile using my pictures”
In an Instagram video yesterday (March 30), Arvind reacted to the details filled in by the scammer on the fake Tinder profile. The name on the profile displays as Madhan.
“I know it’s the month of Ramadhan, but who is Madhan?”
On Tinder, Madhan is 30 years old, and Arwind did not react “too kindly” to how old he may look to others.
“I know I look matured and responsible, but 30 years old???”
So now we know that Madhan is 30 years old. According to the profile, Madhan is a “social media strategist at MNC”. Arwind, however, has no idea what’s MNC, and asked
“What the hell is MNC???”
The person who created Madhan’s profile clearly did not care about the accuracy of Arwind’s real life details. Madhan has a bachelor’s degree, goes to the gym often, and labels himself as a Cancer. Arwind, who is a Scorpio admitted that he neither has a bachelor’s degree nor goes to the gym.
Near the end of his video, Arwind jokingly told his follower to swipe right on Madhan’s profile just for the sake of seeing what surprises he has in store.
“But if he starts asking for number or nudes, please don’t, honeyboo. You ask him to send his first, then check with me if it’s the same,” Arwind laughed.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Arwind revealed that this is not his first time of being told about a fake account with his images.
“There have been a couple of times when people had reported of a fake/misleading account using my pictures/content.”
Arwind added that he feels that this recent experience can be used to warn others to be more cautious about who they’re speaking to on an app, but of course, he enjoys handling it with a tinge of comedy.
“The message gets conveyed clearly & everyone gets to destress themselves a little through laughter.”
Arwind also told WORLD OF BUZZ that he has no intention to bring the matter to the police but he hopes that people will learn to take their time in getting to know someone before disclosing any personal information.
“Social media can be quite scary especially for people who are naïve and lack experience/knowledge,” Arwind explained.
If you’re active on social media and enjoy being a social butterfly, do not let your guard down. As Arwind said, always be mindful of who’s on the other end of an app.
