Despite feeling disappointed with the High Court’s verdict, Najib Razak’s family says they will not retreat.

The former Prime Minister received an additional 15-year prison sentence on top of the six years he is currently serving. The verdict came after the High Court found Najib guilty on all charges in the 1MDB case, and Najib’s son shared the family’s thoughts on the matter.

“We have no room for defence.”

In a video posted on his Facebook page yesterday (27 December), Nizar Najib said that after years of fighting for his father, the outcome has been deeply disappointing, leaving the family feeling as though they have no room for defence at all.

Nizar added that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the government had previously confirmed that Najib’s donation came from the Government of Saudi Arabia, and the investigation was deemed satisfactory.

“In court, however, it was deemed hearsay and double hearsay.”

Nizar described the 15-year jail term and RM11 billion fine as a major disappointment

He also stressed that his father’s significant contributions to the country should be considered, and expressed regret that the main culprit in the 1MDB case, Jho Low, remains at large. Despite the challenges, Nizar said the family will not retreat or give up, and wished his father strength while serving his sentence.

Najib also penned an open letter to Malaysians, saying that at times, he feels like he is fighting alone, and that he has always intended to contribute not only to the country’s development but also to the well-being of Malaysians.

The former PM will appeal the High Court’s decision.
