Jom Enjoy! Here Are 5 Fun-Filled Ideas Families Can Try Out During This School Holiday

Cuti sekolah is finally upon us, meaning that families will have some much-needed time to unwind for their mental and physical well-being! To make the holidays extra special — as well as to inspire families to live healthier, longer, better lives — here are a few fun and wholesome activities you can enjoy together this school break:

1. A Malaysian kuih and snacks bake-off

What better time to teach your kids how to make seasonal snacks with a wholesome baking day than the holiday season? Try making healthier versions of classic snacks, such as using natural sweeteners in your kuih lapis, incorporating more fruits into CNY snacks, or blending in some whole grains into your vadai. Then, top it off by letting the kids decorate with chopped nuts, sesame seeds, and dried fruits. The possibilities are endless!

2. Berkhemah kat Rumah

Who says you have to head into the great outdoors to camp? Just pitch a tent in your yard or nearby park, and you’re all set! Tell stories about the yesteryears of Malaysian life, play camping games, and reconnect with nature right under the stars. And instead of marshmallows, why not try grilling some satay or otak-otak over the campfire for a special and healthy Malaysian touch?

3. DIY your batik house decor

Did you know colour schemes in your home are known to affect your mood and mental health? So to indulge in a bit of colour therapy, try painting some homemade batik-inspired decor to promote wellness and create positive vibes in your living space (the Malaysian way)!

Unleash your family’s inner artists using fabric paint or watercolours, and create beautiful batik patterns that evoke our national heritage with elegant traditional motifs from Kelantan and Terengganu. Beautiful house = Beautiful life! Speaking of your house…

4. Gotong-royong together!

Needless to say, a clean home is important for a clean life, kan? Dedicate a few hours to working together as a family to tidy up your shared space. Here’s what we can suggest to spice things up:

• Discard Books and Toys KonMari Style: Set a limit on toys and books your kiddos can keep, then task them with cleaning and packing the rest before donating them to a local charity or community centre. To make it more wholesome, take a page from Marie Kondo and have them thank their discarded belongings as a thoughtful way to approach tidying and daily life.
• Ops Cuci Rumah: Give everyone a fun role, like one child can be in charge of dusting the lower shelves, while parents handle the out-of-reach areas. Gamify the chore into a lively cleaning party!
• Pantry Power-Up: Work together to organise the kitchen pantry. Have the kids check expiration dates so that you can easily create a to-buy list for your next grocery trip. Plus, this teaches the little ones household management and waste reduction!
