If you were born in the 70s, or simply a fan of the famous fast-food chain, KFC, let’s take a trip down memory lane!

KFC is one of the oldest and most famous fast-food chains in Malaysia, and in case you’re not aware, it has been in Malaysia as early as the 70s. According to KFC Malaysia’s official website, the first outlet opened its doors in 1973 at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, KL. But today, we’re going to talk about the outlet in Sungei Wang Plaza, Bukit Bintang, KL.

The images of KFC in Sungei Wang Plaza recently circulated online, and Sungei Wang Plaza’s Facebook page said that the outlet has been operating for more than 40 years now. As Sungai Wang Plaza is also one of the oldest malls in KL, the images of both the fast-food chain and the mall during their peak days were shared on social media.

You can check out the images below and just look at the crowd during the weekends, circa 1978!

The Facebook post also revealed that KFC in Sungei Wang Plaza once had the highest sales in the WORLD, even after the sales were converted to USD! Sungei Wang Plaza also shared an image of the “Colonel” visiting the outlet in 1998.

Meanwhile, a report by China Press said that the monthly rent for KFC Sungei Wang back then would go as high as RM60,000, which is almost equivalent to the price of a 1,800 sf double-story house in Klang Valley.

Now, KFC in Malaysia has expanded and in 2011, the 500th outlet of KFC was opened in Subang 2. The 700th outlet in Seremban was opened back in 2018.

Good old times

Many Malaysians, especially those who could resonate with the good old times spent in both KFC and Sungei Wang Plaza 4 decades ago took some time to reminisce about what the place used to look like.

“The Esquire Kitchen was so crowded back then, and it gave us a high-end restaurant vibe.”

“The place where people came to date a lot previously.”

“Good old days. The smell of the chocolate chip cookies from the first floor was the best.”

“Back then, Sungei Wang Plaza was crowded even on weekdays.”

“There are a lot of malls in KL now, I don’t think we can go back to these good old times.”

“The place we went to for arcade games.”

“One of the must-visit spots when I studied in Malaysia. Haven’t been there for more than 10 years.”

“The memories of my youth were in Sungai Wang Plaza.”

Some of us are probably not old enough to reminisce about a 40-year old fast food chain and shopping mall, but have you heard about the good, olden days in this mall? If you were present during the glory days of KFC in Sungei Wang Plaza, what are your fondest memories of the place?
