Birthdays are definitely fun when you’re able to celebrate with the ones you care about. That being said, some friends and family would go above and beyond to make sure that the birthday person feels the love.

Breaking barriers creatively

Just recently, a bunch of Malaysians have decided to give their friend a surprise. In a 2-minute video posted on Facebook, it shows a bunch of friends eating at a restaurant. While they were hanging, a group of men wearing a white traditional Malay clothing walked in while playing on their kompang.

After the group of men came in, they stood right in front of their table playing and moments after, a man wearing a black shirt then sent the cake over to the birthday boy. The group of men playing kompang then started singing “Happy Birthday” and his friends joined in.

After singing the English version, the kompang players then sang it in Mandarin, making the celebration extra joyous. The birthday boy, Leon was quite shocked and throughout the whole session, he was laughing as he didn’t expect for his friends to hire a kompang team to celebrate his birthday.

Malaysian spirit at its best

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Teo has mentioned that him and his friends were thinking of a creative way to celebrate their friend’s birthday.

“We wanted to celebrate the birthday in a meaningful yet creative way. Traditionally for Chinese people, when they celebrate birthdays it’s always lion dance or dragon dance, so we wanted something different.

As we were thinking about traditional cultures, we just thought why not we incorporate other people’s traditional culture and that’s when we decided to hire a group of Malay kompang players to help with our celebration”, he said.

Teo then mentioned that,

“My friends and I believe that by inviting them and exposing ourselves to their culture, we can better understand them, and it could definitely help Malaysians feel closer to each other.

We hope that Malaysians who see this can take this occasion in a positive light and remember that this is part of our Malaysian culture.”

This was truly a joy to watch and a big thank you to Teo and his friends for sharing this story. May the Malaysian spirit in all of us continue to grow as we accept each other despite our differences.
