Walking can be tiresome at times, but if you’re frequently in the Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman area during the weekends, you might need to get used to travelling on foot!

Just this evening in the Parliament (August 11), Deputy Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias revealed that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has plans to close Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to traffic every Sunday starting September 28. The reason is simple – he wants to encourage a “walking culture” among the city folks.

Jalan Tar

He said DBKL was conducting engagement sessions with the parties in the affected areas to enable the road closure to be realised.

Travelling on foot? You’ll be entertained!

If you’re travelling on foot at Jalan TAR and expected some “sightseeing”, fret not! Jalaludin mentioned that various programmes will be implemented throughout the road closure, such as:

  • Buskers performances
  • Creative arts performances
  • Traditional sports programmes

In the meantime, Jalan TAR might not be the only one to face possible road closures on Sunday in the future. According to BERNAMA, DBKL is studying plans to do the same from the junction of Jalan Pudu until the Jalan Bukit Bintang intersection. Not only that but once the pedestrian infrastructure upgrade projects have been completed, the area will experience a “rebranding”, which can be an indirect form of tourist attraction.

Your safety is their priority

It can be risky to walk around on foot, especially after dark. As stated by Jalaludin himself, you can rest assured that DBKL does not make light of pedestrian safety.

“About 5,000 CCTV cameras has been installed throughout KL City, with 2,062 of them focused on pedestrian walkways.”

In the meantime, 250 enforcement officers are expected to patrol the areas from time to time.

Do you think this is a good move by DBKL, and do you think the walking culture will ease the traffic in KL during the weekends?
