During these few months, there have been many people talking about how people on e-scooters are going onto the main roads.

In a press conference, Minister of Transport Wee Ka Siong has said that micro-mobility vehicles on main roads are prohibited.

“This ban had been gazetted under the Road Traffic Rules and had been in effect since Dec 17.”

He elaborated that the ban is extended to mopeds, electric scooters (internal combustion engine power or human power) and personal mobility aids.

The minister also clarified that bicycles are a type of micro-mobility vehicle but they are not prohibited on the road. However, they do need to comply with the regulations under both the Road Transport Act and Road Traffic Rules.

Speaking on electric bicycles, those that comply with the standards department’s requirements are allowed on the road.

“The police and road transport department will start enforcement immediately and those that are found breaking the law will be prosecuted under the Road Transport Act.”

Wee Ka Siong

Minister Wee Ka Siong added that local authorities can look at constructing infrastructures that will enable the safe use of micro-mobility vehicles such as bicycle lanes and so on.
