Growing up in a multicultural country, we are spoilt for choices: Nasi lemak, roti canai or char kuey teow. Seriously, how does one even pick???

And since we’re such big foodies, we literally eat anything – and the humble street food is one of our favourites. Besides your usual Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan, here are more amazing street food that will leave your mouth-watering!

1. Portuguese egg tarts

We know egg tarts are easily available in Malaysia, but Macao is absolutely known for their egg tarts so we will NOT be skipping out on that.

Macao does egg tarts in their own unique way. These tarts have caramelised tops that resemble creme brûlée, giving them a unique flavour you can only get in Macao!

The best spot to try these tarts out has to be Lord Stow’s Bakery.

Who doesn’t love ice cream? We know we’d eat it no matter what the weather’s like!

Anyone who goes to Macao makes sure to make it to LemonCello Gelato, which has over 60 different flavours of ice cream, including beancurd, ginger, banana sesame, and even durian!

Be sure to try out their house special, the Limoncello gelato, too! We hear it’s to die for!

3. Pork chop buns

Okay guys, brace yourselves for this next one.

One of Macao’s famous street food has definitely got to be the pork chop bun, which consists of a tender, juicy piece of pork within a bun that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Looks good, right? Sorry, obviously not halal.

If your mouth is watering already, try it out at Sun Ying Kei or Café Tai Lei Koi Kei, which are both famous for their amazing pork chop buns!

4. Steamed milk pudding

Who doesn’t love some good, comforting sweet milk pudding? 

What makes this pudding so unique is the variety of flavours they come in, including their double skimmed milk pudding with red bean and their steamed milk with ginger.

Every Malaysian definitely has a sweet tooth they need to attend to, and the best way to fulfil those cravings would definitely be with Macau’s famous steamed milk pudding from Yi Shun.

 

5. Sandviche “Nam Peng”

With a generous portion of omelette, ham and char siew, this delicious sandwich is the perfect breakfast food to start your day in Macao. Just look at how fluffy that egg is!

Macau’s famous Dai Gwan restaurant serves one of the best black pepper buns in the city.

These delicious flaky buns are stuffed with black pepper pork and spring onions, giving them a delectable savoury flavour that will satisfy anyone’s cravings!

 

7. Good quality Dim Sum

We know, we know! Although dim sum is readily available here, Malaysians will still inevitably try out their amazing version of dim sum.

Chong Shing, a small restaurant hidden away in a small street, serves high quality dim sum like shumai and mah lai goh (Cantonese sponge cake). This hidden gem is definitely one great place to try out amazing dim sum!

What’s more amazing about this place is that it even appeared on the Michelin Guide! Ha, now you know why we had to put this here!

 

8. Serradura

Despite it’s weird nickname, Serradura (or sawdust pudding) is one of Macao’s original desserts. This simple yet delicious dessert consists of custard covered in biscuit crumbs, making it look like sawdust.

One of the best stalls serving this unique dessert is Gelatina Mok Yi Kei, where you can enjoy this pudding on the street.

 

9. Delicious roast meat

One of Macao’s most sought after street food definitely has to be their roast meats. There’s something about Macao’s roasted meat, they just get the skin to the perfect level of crispiness while maintaining the tenderness of the meat inside!

Chen Guang Ji Roast Meat is definitely one place to check out to get the city’s best roast meats, including roast duck, chicken, and pork just to name a few. The black pepper roast duck is one of their most popular dishes!
