Recently, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) took to their Facebook page to bring the public’s attention to the worrying number of disposable face masks being thrown out on the streets.

In their post, they explained that individuals should not simply dispose of their face masks everywhere as the used face masks may be contaminated with the Covid-19 virus. This would result in others being more exposed to the virus, thus increasing the risk of infection.

Throwing Face Mask

“Don’t throw away used faces everywhere. The used face coverage may be contaminated with the #Covid19 virus and expose[s] the risk of infection to others,” they wrote in the post, as well as providing pictures of used masks seen lying around on the littered streets.

KKM took the opportunity to educate the public on the right way to dispose of a used face mask by following these 7 simple steps:

7 Steps Of Disposing Used Face Mask

Step 1: Remove your face mask.

Step 2: Make sure your hands are not touching the outer part of the used face mask.

Step 3: Fold the used face mask into two.

Step 4: Roll up the used face mask.

Step 5: Place the used face mask into a plastic bag.

Step 6: Dispose of the used face mask into the nearest trash can.

Step 7: Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after disposing of the used face mask.

Do not litter and do not ever throw your used face mask freely. Let’s work together and ensure that we not only prioritise our health but keep our beautiful Mother Earth clean as well.
