“Even to buy food, we have no money” Poor Johor Family Feeds Autistic Son Condensed Milk

They say parents hurt the most when their kids are suffering, and sadly there are many Malaysian children out there who live under the circumstances of poverty.

Just like the little girl who had to feed her 1-year-old brother sweet concentrated milk, another family, this time in Mersing, has come forward to share that they too feed their small children condensed milk due to their poor financial situation.

According to MyMetro, 27-year-old Siti Asmahul Husnah Maarof and her 33-year-old husband, Muhamad Firdausi Nasaruddin, can no longer afford to buy food as they’ve only received a low volume of cleaning jobs since the pandemic started.

Her husband, who is for hire as a cleaner, would earn around RM30 to RM50 per house he cleaned.

“It’s been a while since anyone has hired us to clean their house, even to buy food, we have no money,” said Siti Asmahul.

Since the pandemic, they’ve only received about two jobs a month, causing financial difficulties for the family.

She shared that due to their lack of income, their eldest son who has autism, eight-year-old Muhammad Furqan Dzulkarnain, is forced to drink sweet concentrated milk. They also have a two-month-old child.

“He has not earned much wages because of the pandemic, whereas monthly expenditures require at least RM700,” she explained.

Unfortunately, her husband has to work alone, as she is unable to help her husband due to anxiety and depression, leading her to focus on the well-being of her family.

“The always-aggressive Furqan once injured his right knee when he was four-years-old, causing him to need constant attention from my husband. After undergoing surgery and physiotherapy, Furqan can walk again,” she added.

Due to his condition, Furqan receives RM150 from the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Besides that, their neighbours and family members would help them however they can.

Nasir Ishak, an administrative officer for the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ) shared that Muhamad Firdausi had applied for help in 2018, but failed.

He added that the family should try to apply again for consideration.
