In a statement issued by Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) on Thursday, as reported by Sinar, announcing that free fares will be given for two weeks for pedestrians to use the ferry service starting 1 January 2021. The decision was made as a result of discussions with Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. The statement said,

“PPSB will provide free fares to pedestrians for two weeks from 1 to 14 January 2021. PPSB is committed to providing reliable ferry services and facilities for the use of the public.”

Earlier, PPSB announced that the ferry service in Penang for four-tire vehicles will be stopped starting January 1. Instead, the existing ferry will continue to operate for the use of motorcycle and bicycle transport only. This means that, from that date, all four-wheeled vehicles including private cars can no longer use the sea route as an alternative to the island area or vice versa.

Pedestrians will board speedboats that will replace the existing ferry service to connect passengers between the island and Seberang Perai.
