Most employees were asked to work from home ever since the Movement Control Order started in March and the ruling was subsequently made mandatory in areas under the Conditional Movement Control Order by the Defence Minister. If you’re someone who has been working from home, you would know that it’s NOT EASY!

Working parents who have to take care of their kids while they work have especially found it difficult. The last thing employers should be doing during these tricky times is to micromanage. Based on this, you can guess why netizens on Twitter had a field day bashing this Twitter user who posted a controversial tweet. Zulkifli Ab, posted on his Twitter about an app that can be used to track employees when they’re working from home.

“Okay, I’ve found an app that can be used to track what my staffs are doing when they’re working from home.”

Needless to say, this tweet garnered a lot of hate with a lot of netizens saying that he’s an employer who micromanages and that the work environment is probably toxic.

“I pity the staffs who’ve got a boss like this. If you treat your people well and fairly with respect, you will definitely have productive employees who are proud to vouch for your company who are proud to vouch for your company. The rest comes later.

There’s no need to brag that you’re tracking productivity and what not. This type of leadership style is very boring.”

One netizen felt that employer should track their employees based on their completed tasks instead of their working hours. This kind of monitoring is even counter productive as a staff will purposely finish a task slowly to buy time.

Tracking them is better than forcing employees to come to the office!

To find out more the reasoning of why an employer would want to track their employees, we reached out to Zulkifli who explained the situation from his side. Firstly, he clarified that he is just sharing the app and not using it for his company, at least, not yet.

Work From Home 1

“I dont think employees activity monitoring can be considered as micromanage. There’re a lot of big corporations out there optimizing it in their companies.”

He even asked which is worse, employers forcing their employees to come to office ignoring SOPs OR an app that can be used to track employees. Zulkilfi feels that tracking doesn’t mean that they will be strictly enforcing what can and can’t be done during work from home. “We understand work from home can be challenging especially for parents etc,” he said.

Micromanaging or not? Let us know what you think!
