A newborn baby girl was abandoned at a Penang flat where residents found her wrapped in a white towel and stuffed into a bag.

The 3.2kg baby was found placed below the mailbox at Block 47, Paya Terubong on Sunday (1 November). Thankfully, the baby was rescued by a resident at about 12.40pm, reported Astro Awani.

According to North East District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, the police received a call from a man who had just returned from work, informing them that he had discovered the baby.

“Examinations found that the baby did not suffer any injuries but the umbilical cord of the baby was cut,” he said.

“The baby was later taken to the Penang Hospital for further examination. No other documents were found in the bag.”

He added that the police are still conducting further investigations including tracking down the individual who dumped the baby and asking for the cooperation of the public who have information about the incident.

He said that there have been no witnesses so far and that the residential area does not have a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera. However, they are conducting further investigations to track down the mother who gave birth to the baby and the party who dumped the baby there.

With the number of baby dumping cases increasing lately, there is also a growing concern about youngsters not getting the proper sex education that they need, which leads to consequences like unwanted pregnancies. We hope the authorities will look into this matter seriously.
