As Asians, we probably get used to being compared ALL the time! Whether it’s to your siblings or your cousins, being compared over your exam results, job and salary is something that unfortunately has been ingrained in all of us from an extremely young age.

This Malaysian who got sick of being compared to a cousin vented his frustration on UTAR confession about his relative who insulted him for driving an old Myvi while his cousin who has just been working for 3 years can afford a Honda City.

The confessor asked what’s wrong with driving an old Myvi since don’t all cars just have the same four tires? The relatives who love to compare cars are the ones who believe that only by driving a fancy car you have a standard in society. They even added that it’s not that they’re not jealous and can even change their car any time but they just don’t want to due to work priorities. However, this doesn’t stop their relatives from making comparisons.

“What do you do? My son has only been working for 3 years and bought a new Honda City.”

Since the cousin lives with his parents and eats their food, and that’s why the relatives can’t save money. If they can’t save money, the son will also be miserable. The confessor also said that they still live in an apartment on their own, even though their parents still cover their basic needs.

With the savings accumulated now, the confessor said he have bought their own apartment and in two years will accumulate six-figure savings. Although his wife only drives an Axia, she can afford to support her parents to rebuild their house. “I don’t think there’s any shame in driving Myvi or Axia. Unless my Myvi really can’t function, I never thought of changing cars,” he said.

The cousin who bought the new car barely even uses the car as he was afraid it would get stolen during the Movement Control Order. Even if you don’t use a new car, over time it will definitely depreciate in value.

Do we really need this “comparing” culture anymore? Let us know in the comments section!
