In a time when social distancing is paramount in ensuring that the transmission of Covid-19 is limited, those who eschew from putting this into practice often risk being put under the harsh glare of the public’s scrutiny. Politicians and their respective parties are no stranger to this truth, and it would seem that this ill-advised disregard for public safety has trickled down to common society too.

Late last night, it has been reported by netizens online that rivaling mat rempit gangs had congregated outside roads leading into Kuala Lumpur’s Dataran Merdeka. Allegedly from different groups, those who have met up last night outside the square most famous for being the site where Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, had proclaimed the nation’s independence from British rule, took to their fists over an unknown conflict.

While details remain scarce as of writing, what is clear is that the large group of mat rempits did not appear to be observing any calls for social distancing. In fact, some seen in the videos circulating online were not wearing any face masks at all.

It is unknown if the police have been made wary of this situation, but netizens have already called upon the authorities to investigate the matter over fears that the group may result in a possible new cluster, should any of those present exhibit symptoms of Covid-19.

This is a developing story and more details will be provided as they are made available. What are your thoughts on this?
