A total of 207 out of 13,929 illegal immigrants detained at three Immigration Detention Depots in West Malaysia have tested positive for Covid-19 so far.

According to Astro Awani, Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said that 110 of the detainees were sent to the treatment centre at the Malaysia Serdang Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS) for treatment, while the rest of them are still at the three Immigration Detention Depots in Bukit Jalil, KLIA and Semenyih.

He had accompanied Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to the quarantine centre at MAEPS on Monday (25 May) with Chief of Police, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

Ismail Sabri had paid a visit to centre to see how well the facility could accommodate Covid-19 patients if the number of cases were to increase. He mentioned that the place could hold up to 600 patients while the government has already identified several other quarantine centres to house them.

Just yesterday (25 May), Malaysia recorded a spike of 172 new Covid-19 cases, of which 112 of them are immigrants. The Ministry of Health is expecting a spike in cases in the days to come as screening and tests are being carried out on these immigrants.

“We foresee more cases recorded in the next few days,” health director-general Dr Noor Hisham said.

“But most importantly, they have been contained and isolated, and those who tested positive have been brought to the hospital for treatment. Once they are negative, they will be quarantined at a designated space.”
