It’s always a great day when something good happens in the world, and even better when it’s in our own backyard.

We’re happy to report that the injured homeless uncle that was rescued by Grab driver, Shanker Vellu, has been reunited with his family thanks to the good samaritan and social media.

Grab driver found an unconscious man by the side of the road

Shanker, who had lost his job in the travel industry during the MCO, had only been a Grab driver for a month when he found the man homeless and unconscious in the middle of the road near Segambut LRT station 2 weeks ago.

Seeing that others did not do anything about the man’s situation, he took it upon himself to help the poor man by calling for an ambulance and making sure he got the treatment he needed.

The man could not even remember his own name let alone where he was from.

He made it a point to visit the uncle every day he was in the hospital and spent time with him.

He shared the story with WORLD OF BUZZ and on social media urging people to help him find the man’s family.

The man is finally reunited with his family

It’s amazing what the power of social media can do!

After 5 days or so, Shanker confirmed that the man’s family had reached out to him after seeing articles and posts about the uncle on social media.

Uncle Messages

Shanker was contacted by the uncle’s niece and nephew. They told him that the 73-year-old uncle had left his home around 2 weeks ago and wandered from Desa Jaya to Segambut.

As the man suffers from memory loss, he must’ve gotten lost and was not able to go home.

Shanker also said “They were so happy and relieved that I had found him and helped him. I received 6 to 7 calls from his relatives thanking me for finding their uncle.”

The family had also invited Shanker to visit the uncle anytime in the hospital or at home.

Shanker also mentioned that he feels proud to be Malaysian because being in a multicultural society had allowed him to learn and speak in multiple languages including Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Tamil and Malay. This was very helpful in the above situation because he could communicate with the uncle in Chinese as the uncle could not understand or speak much in Malay or English.

Shanker also said “I want to remind everyone that when you see someone struggling, especially the elderly, don’t ignore them because someday it might happen to you. So help however you can.”

We’re happy that this story has a beautiful ending and we would like to encourage everyone to keep your eyes open for anyone who might need your help.

After all, we are all Malaysians and that’s what we do best.
