It’s not often you see a Chinese wedding banquet being like this! If you have attended one before then you’ll know that these banquets usually take about three hours to finish as guests enjoy a sit-down dinner that typically consists of eight to 10 dishes.

However, this wedding dinner in Hong Kong made headlines because it was something totally unexpected. According to Topick, the couple had already postponed the wedding dinner once due to Covid-19 and had rescheduled for March 10th. The outbreak doesn’t seem to be subsiding anytime soon, so they decided that instead of postponing again, they would proceed with it in a different way.

Although large gatherings are not encouraged at this point, the couple went ahead but instead of the traditional wedding dinner, they packaged the food into takeaway bags for the guests. Choi Fook Wedding Banquet Group said that they helped to package the food and desserts into 150 bags.

Photos of the food in plastic takeaway boxes were shared on social media, where the restaurant had apparently portioned up the usual wedding food for the guests. Some of it included things like vegetables, roasted pig, noodles and seafood.

The wedding banquet started as usual, with the guests arriving around 7pm and the newlyweds entered the hall around 8.30pm. Speeches and ceremonies were carried out as scheduled, with only drinks served during this time. After that, the guests were sent home with their takeaway bags of food.

Choi Fook Wedding Banquet Group said that the couple requested to do so as the couple did not want people to remove their masks to eat at the event. Removing their masks can increase the risk of getting Covid-19 so they choose to distribute these takeaway bags instead.

Netizens were divided about this “takeaway wedding banquet” and had conflicting opinions. Some of them said that this was no different from ordering a meal from the kopitiam and looked really cheap, which didn’t justify the amount of angpau they had to give.

Some of them said that this was very unenvironmentally-friendly as a lot of single-use plastics were used. However, some said that this was a good approach as the restaurant did not need to lose any business and the guests could be safe.

What do you think about a wedding banquet like that?
