Malaysians are advised not to consume ice from unknown sources during the new coronavirus outbreak as you could risk getting infected.

According to The Star, Phee Boon Poh, committee chairman of Penang Welfare, Caring Society and Environment said that the virus could be transmitted through liquids.

“We do not know the source of water used to produce ice cubes in the market,” he said to reporters on Friday (14th February).

“Some ice manufacturers do not boil the water or properly disinfect the water before freezing.”

“Unless we are certain of the water quality used, it is best to avoid consuming ice.”

He added that keeping good personal hygiene is still the best way to avoid getting infected by the virus, including avoiding unnecessary body contact with others.

Individuals who are unwell with flu or coughs should wear face masks and avoid crowded places, he said.

Meanwhile, Phee mentioned that there are no cases in Penang as of now and urged the public to stop spreading fake news that will cause unnecessary panic.

Maybe lay off outside drinks for the time being?
