Some might say Malaysians are lazy but the truth is, we are among the most hardworking individuals. This statement is somewhat supported by the research findings of a survey conducted by AIA Vitality for Malaysia’s Healthiest Workplace Summit 2019 involving 230 organisations, with a total of 17,595 employees.

The survey discovered that Malaysians are overworked and not getting enough sleep. 51% of them are suffering from work-related stress and 53% are sleeping less than seven hours a day.

Apart from that, 20% reported that they are bullied at work which contributes to the work stress and since they are spending long hours hunched over their laptops, 84% have reported that they were suffering from one or more musculoskeletal conditions. The survey wrote, as quoted by the New Straits Times,

“In addition to long working hours, increased after-hours work connectivity and work-related stress are also factors associated with sleep problems, which could lead to the increasing probability of developing severe mental health condition among employees.”

On top of these worrisome percentages, there are also other statistics that are equally bad. 42% of employees have reported that they are overweight and obese and for those who are suffering all these problems, 45% of the companies they work for do no provide any form of mental help.

Are you suffering from any work-related problems? Does your workplace provide any means to deal with such problems? Or are you taking steps in ensuring your overall well-being? Share with us your thoughts in the comment section below.
