Bubble tea and boba shops seem to be popping up everywhere these days, and boba lovers are undoubtedly pleased with the number of shops catering to their cravings.

However, bubble tea and boba can break the bank quite a bit if you’re not careful, which is why many of us are also looking for the ideal shop that serves great drinks that are affordable to boot. This Malaysian recently took to Twitter to share a video of an affordable boba stall in Kuala Lumpur, showing the vendor preparing a cup of brown sugar boba milk using a blowtorch to caramelise the surface of the drink.

However, the video soon received a lot of comments from well-meaning, concerned netizens, who pointed out that it was unsafe for the plastic cup to be directly exposed to the blowtorch’s flames as it could melt, making the drink potentially dangerous to ingest.

Other netizens also advised the stall owners to purchase metal protectors they can use to shield the plastic cups from the flames.

The above tweet translates,

“If they use the metal protector when using the blowtorch, their drinks would be much better. If you visit their stall again, please be sure to give them this advice because it can be dangerous to directly burn the surface of the drink with the plastic cup exposed like that.”

Meanwhile, the netizen who originally shared the video agreed that the stall owners’ methods weren’t safe, but assured that he would advise them the next time he visited their stall.

Well, we hope that the stall owners heed netizens’ advice and buy appropriate protective equipment. Meanwhile, we hope that this is also educational to both consumers and boba-sellers. Let’s all take extra care when preparing and consuming this delicious drink!
