On 18 May, two students from Chung Ling High School, Penang, won the first place under the Chemistry category at Intel ISEF (Intel International Science and Engineering Fair)! FYI, Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition!

The competition was held from 11 to 18 May 2019 in Arizona, United States, SinChew reported. They’re on their way home to Malaysia today, and the Vice Minister of Education in Penang awaits their arrival at the airport.

These two Form 5 students are Melwin Choon Lei Cheng and Yong Shiang Tham.

This photo shows the two of them posing in front of their presentation booth, showcasing their research.

They have created a remarkable invention by making the cinnamon crude extract into a novel, cost-effective and eco-friendly larvicide! According to SinChew, the purpose of this larvicide is to combat the Aedes larvae.

These two students earned their ticket to the Intel ISEF this year by winning gold at PISTEK (National Science & Engineering Innovation Challenge) in November 2018.

This led to their victory under the Chemistry category, winning $3,000 (approximately RM12,520) in total.

After winning the award, they held the Jalur Gemilang and posed for another photo with their teacher who tagged along to the fair to support them.

The principal of their school stated that this research project had been carried out for two years. Since the result of this study remained confidential, they will only make an announcement about it at a press conference next Friday.

A big good job to these two boys who have made it all the way to the international stage.

We sure do hope to witness more of their achievements in the near future.

Talents like them should always be appreciated and recognised as our nation’s pride. This kind of news will not only serve as a source of inspiration for our Malaysian youth but also a reminder for us that we should always applaud the success of our youth!

Let us congratulate them for their amazing achievements, and also thank them for making Malaysia proud.
