Yikes, this is concerning!

The Star reported that medical graduates are unable to complete their housemanship or are taking a long time to finish their term because they usually can’t live up to the demands of being a physician.

According to Universiti Malaya (UM) Faculty of Medicine’s dean Prof Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, the two-year housemanship is really difficult because students must “adapt to the transition from medical school to working in wards”. Nevertheless, sadly, many of them couldn’t cope with the transition. Dr Adeeba was quoted as saying,

“That is why the selection of medical students is an important step. They must have the right attitude. That is what we are doing at UM, instilling resilience.”

“They should not enter medicine because their parents forced them to and they think it is a glamorous job with a lot of money to be made.”

True that!

Dr Adeeba made these statements to the reporters who were at the MEDxUM conference. FYI, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad also attended the above-mentioned conference which was held at UM on 13 April 2019.

If you didn’t know, Dr Dzulkefly revealed in parliament on April 11 that 70 per cent of medical students have finished their housemanship within the span of two years.

However, he said that the remaining students took a tad bit too long to complete their housemanship and this creates a backlog in the system for existing vacancies in the field. Dr Dzulkefly explained,

“Treat it as a period to acquire knowledge and skills. Respect your teachers and they will train you to be better doctors.”

That’s a good piece of advice!
