Although some countries in Asia share certain similarities in culture, each still retains its individual uniqueness.

Below are a compilation to show the beauty of these differences.

 

1. Malaysia

Yes there are 3 and more races in Malaysia but this time round we’ll be focusing on Malays. The Malay couple above is dressed in the traditional Malay attire, the man in baju melayu (top) with a sampin (bottom). While the woman is dressed in a kebaya.

 

2. Thailand

In the traditional Thai wedding, the bride and groom wear garlands around their necks and remain in a kneeling position while the elders give a few words and anoint them on the forehead.

 

3. Indonesia

Traditionally in an Indonesia wedding, the bride and groom will be seated together with a veil known as a seledang, covering both their heads. It is to symbolize the both of one mind.

 

4. China

Weddings in China are a huge cause for a celebration. Firecrackers and loud gongs/drums are used to alert the neighborhood of the celebration when the groom goes to collect his bride at her place. The bride and groom will be dressed in red that symbolizes prosperity.

 

5. Korea

As per tradition in South Korea, before the wedding takes place, the groom will present a wild goose (lately a wooden goose is used) to the bride mother. Wild geese mate for life, it’s to say that he will care for the bride for life.

 

6. Japan

San-San-Kudo, amongst one of the traditional ceremonies in a Japanese wedding, is a sake-sharing ceremony where 3 cups of sake are stacked and drank by the bride and groom. “Three-three-nine” as per the name; 3 meaning love, wisdom, and happiness, while 9 means good luck.

 

7. India

In an Indian wedding, the Mangala Sutra is tied around the bride’s neck instead of exchanging rings. It is tied with three knots to symbolize the bonding of two souls for 100 years.

 

8. Sri Lanka

In the traditional wedding ceremony in Sri Lanka, the bride, groom and their family perform a set of rituals on the Poruwa (beautifully decorated, traditional wooden platform). It’s also known as a Poruwa ceremony.

 

9. Cambodia

The celebration for a  traditional Cambodian wedding, also known as a Khmer wedding, used to be held for three days and night. In modern days, the wedding only last for a night (the banquet).

 

10. Tibet

In the olden times, a Tibetan bride would wear a white, woolen wedding dress with layers of bright aprons and robes. But the in modern times, the tradition has gone out of style.

 

11. Mongolia

In a traditional Mongolian wedding, people who attend the wedding would be dressed in long sleeves and have their shoulders covered to symbolized a good and complete life for the bride and groom.

 

12. Vietnam

During the procession to receive the bride, a Vietnamese groom and his family would carry decorated lacquer boxes (gifts to the bride’s family) in red cloth that represent his wealth.
