Just a few months ago, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) offered discounts on traffic summonses to encourage motorists to settle their tickets quickly. However, it appears that a large number of drivers still have not paid what they owe DBKL, hence, some stern action will be taken against them.

Drivers who have not settled their summonses by the 1st of September deadline have already been blacklisted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

This means that those who have failed to pay will not be allowed to renew their driving licences and road taxes until they properly settle all outstanding summonses, even for those with just one ticket. Needless to say, discounts do not apply to outstanding summonses.

KL Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan mentioned that this move to blacklist these drivers was decided upon by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad. The mayor was quoted by the New Straits Times as saying,

“For now, we will press ahead with blacklisting the traffic offenders, seeing that DBKL’s offer of settling summonses at discounted rates have failed to encourage offenders to clear their summonses. I will discuss this with Khalid to find the best solution to this issue.”

As of August 2018, DBKL had reportedly issued 4.5 million traffic summonses amounting up to RM1 billion and while City Hall’s target was to collect RM100 million in settled summonses, only RM2 million has been collected so far.

So, if you haven’t already done so, please settle any outstanding traffic summonses if you do not want to remain blacklisted!
