Picking up an extra skill or two is always a good idea as it can help you in your career or in anything you do in the future. This was proven by Nurul Fatihah Shamsudin Shah, 27, a Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) officer who went viral on social media recently due to her ability to speak sign language with a disabled person.

According to mStar, Nurul Fatihah had actually started learning sign language when she was in secondary school as she wanted to fill up her spare time. She also had a few special education friends living in the same hostel as her and to communicate better with them, she decided to go for sign language classes from Form One until Form Five.

She had the chance to put her skills to good use when a deaf and mute couple entered the JPJ Kuala Lumpur office to make a complaint recently. They wanted to lodge a report against a driving institute that had received payment but did not help them to proceed with the application process for a driving licence until the lady’s “L” licence had almost expired.

While making the report, the disabled couple had a hard time communicating with the officer on duty so another colleague had asked Nurul Fatihah to be the translator as she knows sign language. Thanks to her help, the lady will be given assistance and can attend free driving classes so that she can qualify for a valid licence.

Nurul Fatihah’s colleague managed to take a short video of her being the translator and it was uploaded on social media, which garnered praise and well wishes from netizens. Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry also acknowledges the exceptional service that she gave to the lady and gave her a certificate of appreciation.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said, “The ministry is very proud of Nurul Fatihah and would like to give her a little token of appreciation for her commitment in giving exceptional service to the disabled customers at the JPJ Kuala Lumpur office recently.”

He added that Nurul Fatihah had set a very good example for all public servants so that they will provide service that was just as excellent as hers.
