Datuk Seri Najib Razak has released a statement on his Facebook page, arguing the claim made by Tun Mahathir in regards of the nation’s RM1 trillion debt. He said the figure was nothing but a lie made up by the Pakatan Harapan.

Melalui ucapan yang disiarkan televisyen semalam, Tun Mahathir mendakwa Malaysia akan bankrap hanya dengan membayar…

He said,

“The definition of RM1 trillion in debt is not based on international standards. PH is the government in the world which uses such a definition.

Not only is this is a lie, it is also a false statement that will not help the country’s economy or win over investor’s confidence.”

Tun Mahathir produced the statement in his speech to mark Pakatan Harapan’s 100 days in power where he also said that the country will be heading towards bankruptcy just by settling the interest of the RM1 trillion debt.

Najib then clarified that although there was an increase in the country’s debt during his reign of power, he still succeeded to manage the country’s deficit.

He continued saying that,

“As a result, the government income and assets, GDP and the assets of government-linked companies have increased more rapidly compared to the debt.”

According to Najib, even if the national debt was RM1 trillion or 80.3% of the GDP, this is still better than other countries. He also shared a ranking of countries and their debts by the CIA, which put Malaysia at the 90th spot among 210 countries. No need to compare with worse countries lah…

He then took a jab at Tun Mahathir saying that during Tun’s first term as prime minister in the 1990s, Malaysia’s debt was actually between 80% and 103.4% but the country was not bankrupt yet even when it was at 103.4%.

Najib then questioned the statement behind Tun Mahathir’s claim that Malaysia will be bankrupted whether the debt is at 50.8% or 80.3%. He will do some analysis, crunch the numbers and provide more details about this matter soon.

He ended his post by asking the Pakatan Harapan government to put more emphasis on ensuring the country’s economy is in good condition and create more job opportunities for the rakyat.

“Stop using figures or make false promises just to paint a bad image of the BN government. This will surely put an end to the country’s economic growth,” Najib said.

What do you think of Najib Razak’s counter argument? What facts and details will he be revealing soon in regards of the country’s debt? We can wait to find out more.
