Yes guys, this isn’t a belated April fool’s joke!

You may remember that earlier in February, a local movie depicting the horrors of the high-profile Mona Fandey murder case got leaked online.

The movie titled ‘Dukun‘ was initially filmed in 2006 and slated for release in 2007. However, the National Film Censorship Board (LPF) banned the film before its screening due to the sensitive nature of its plot, which offended the families of the people being portrayed.

Dukun got leaked online earlier this year, angering the director-general of the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Datuk Fauzi Ayob, who called the leak a “gross violation of intellectual property”.

However, despite its controversial nature, the film is finally being released in Malaysian cinemas nationwide after more than a decade later!

According to Berita Harian, ‘Dukun‘, starring Datin Paduka Umie Aida, will be out in cinemas this Thursday (5th April). The trailer was uploaded to Instagram yesterday (1st April) and has since garnered over 54,000 views.

The movie is loosely based on the story of Mona Fandey, who in 2001, was convicted of brutally murdering a local politician, Mazlan Idris by having her assistant chop off his head during a ‘bomoh’ ritual to help him become more successful in politics.

Her murder trial was all anyone could talk about back then due to Mona Fandey’s eerily calm and cheerful demeanour whenever she was photographed outside the courthouse.

She was ultimately sentenced to death by hanging, along with her assistant and her husband. Right before she was executed, her last words were, “Saya takkan mati” (I won’t die).

So, curious to check out ‘Dukun’? Check out the official trailer for yourself!

Consider our weekend plans sorted!
