A drunk driver was arrested after crashing into a security barrier at Gate 2 of Istana Negara this morning (23 January).

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident happened at about 3:30 AM, involving a 21-year-old man who was driving a Toyota Vios from Bukit Damansara.

Alcohol content exceeded what was permitted.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was travelling from Bukit Damansara when it collided with a safety structure along Jalan Changkat Semantan. The damage occurred to the front of the car as well as the bollard pole and barrier gate at the entrance to Istana Negara.

Mohd Zamzuri also said that the police obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, recorded conversations, and conducted a breath test on the driver in the investigation into the incident.

“The test found that the alcohol content in the driver’s body was 166 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood, which is above the permitted limit,” Zamzuri said in a statement, as reported by BERNAMA.

Fortunately, no injuries to the driver or anyone else were reported, and at the time of writing, Istana Negara has yet to respond to the matter.

Following this, the driver involved was arrested, and the investigation papers were referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office on January 23, 2026, before being ordered to be charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The driver is scheduled to be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court (13), Jalan Duta, this morning for a remand application.
