Whether you own a pet cat or not, chances are, you’ve seen them exhibiting some common behaviours (few of which sometimes boggle our minds) – be it in person or in the many cute videos you’ve seen online. Wish there was a decoder to tell you what these cat behaviours actually mean? That’s what this listicle is going to tell you because we’ve deciphered 5 common behaviours in cats and the secret meaning behind each one of them.
1. When they have a “stare off” with you
Ever seen your cat just suddenly start giving you that “deer in the headlights” look? Sometimes, it even turns into a staring contest, and then they just walk away as if nothing had happened.
What it means: Cats are territorial, and this behaviour towards humans could be a sign of ownership since they obviously mean no harm towards you!
2. When they sit in tight, tiny spaces
Instead of that comfy bed you bought for your kitty, they’d rather sit in a box, curl up in your laundry bag, or snuggle among your clothes in the closet.
If it fits, they’ll sit!
What it means: Tiny spaces are their go-to places because they feel safe and secure. Plus, they can observe their surroundings from a distance without being susceptible to predators.
3. When they rub against your leg or expose their bellies while rolling around on the ground
If you’ve seen this happen on more than one occasion, fret not, it’s a good sign!
What it means: Rubbing against your leg is your cat’s way of saying “hello” or showing affection, while releasing their scent on you to indicate that you belong to them. Also, cats never expose their bellies unless they’re around someone they trust!
4. When they bring you ‘gifts’ in the form of dead rodents, insects or birds
While you may think this gesture is gross, it’s actually not.

What it means: This is their way of saying “thank you” for taking care of them and hence they’re showing you gratitude with a little ‘present’. Aww!
5. When they suddenly bolt out of nowhere in the middle of the night
If your energetic cat has woken you up or surprised you with random 2am sprints, just know that it’s pretty normal.
What it means: Your cat is simply releasing all the pent-up energy from the day (along with their nocturnal instincts to hunt at night), which is common among most house cats. The solution? Make sure you spend enough time playing with your furry kid lah! 😀
Just like how they randomly barrel down the hallway at high energy because you’re not playing with them enough, sometimes, these cheeky little felines will even try to steal your food!
In fact, some of our very own Malaysian cat owners have experienced this when their cats recently tried to steal some of their KFC Golden Egg Crunch!
Looks like they’ve been paying too much attention on their fried chicken and not their hungry-for-playtime kitty cat, eh? 😛
Don’t believe us? Well, these Malaysian cat owners actually have proof and caught everything on camera. Check out their cats’ reactions in these videos below:
