The Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) has issued a flood warning in the states of Kelantan and Terengganu next week and has called on the public to be on alert. As reported by national news agency Bernama, several areas in Peninsular Malaysia’s east coast, especially in Kelantan and Terengganu are expected to be flooded this Thursday and Friday (30 and 31 December 2021) based on JPS’ flood prediction model.

JPS, a department under the Ministry of Environment and Water, said that the flood prediction was issued following a Significant Weather Forecast warning by the Malaysian Meteorology Department (MetMalaysia) for yesterday until the end of the year.

Furthermore, JPS in a statement also said that Kelantan is expected to experience risk of flooding between 8pm on 30 December 2021 up until 8am the next day following the expected rise in water levels above the danger level in Sungai Galas in Limau Kasturi and Dabong as well as Sungai Kelantan in Kuala Krai. The areas involved in this prediction include:

  • Gua Musang
  • Kuala Krai
  • Areas nearby the two above

Meanwhile, JPS also said that the risk projection involved Dungun and areas around it in Terengganu as the water level in Sungai Dungun in Kampung Pasir Raja is also expected to exceed the danger level.

If you’re in the area mentioned above, please stay safe and prepare for any possibilities of severe flood. Furthermore, JPS also called on the public to constantly be on the alert for flood warning issued by the authorities.
