He apparently had 48 sex videos stored in his mobile phone.
Yesterday, a 41-year-old Malaysian man, known as Harris Carter Chai, was charged with two weeks worth of jail time for showing his Singaporean female co-worker videos of himself having sex with other women.
While showing her the videox, he also boasted of his “power”, referring to his sexual skills.
According to Malay Mail, Chai also had previously shown her pictures of his male sexual organ on 29th January this year and described it in vivid detail during their conversation.
Unsurprisingly, this made the 25-year-old woman feel extremely uneasy, and she abruptly left, telling him that she had to return to work. She reported the sexual harassment case about a week later on 7th February.
The poor woman said she took some time to make the report because she wasn’t sure what to do and had to consult people before taking further action. Thankfully, they advised her to make a police report and she followed through.
When the case was brought to Singaporean court, Chai pleaded guilty on the charge of displaying an object that insulted a woman’s modesty. The second charge was under the Films Act for possessing 48 sex videos in his mobile phone.
What’s MORE infuriating about this is he didn’t classify his offence as a big deal. Chai reportedly told the court in mitigation,
“It did not cross my mind that this would be so serious.”
“This is my first offence. I didn’t mean to do it to my colleague, and we were always joking with each other. Because of this, I lost my job and I’m working as a driver with no steady income now. I need to support my family.”
The sexual offender pleaded only for a fine but the Singaporean judge said that a custodial sentence had to be implemented. And rightfully so! The woman, whose identity is protected by the Singaporean court, responded to his statement with, “You may have thought it was not so serious but this was not a laughing matter.”
While the Chai was not her direct manager at work, he was her superior. Sometimes, the woman would approach him for help in pay-related or administrative matters. They would occasionally have casual conversations about their personal lives. However, that didn’t give him any right to behave the way he did!
For possessing the obscene videos, Chai could have been jailed up to one year, fined up to $40,000 or face a combination of those penalties. The offender will begin serving his two-week sentence on 18th September and now remains out of jail on a $5000 (RM15,000) bail.
Sexual harassment of any form in the workplace is unacceptable! We’re glad she had the courage to report this creep and bring him to justice.
