A young Kazakhstani man won a court case to get a traffic summons revoked, not by hiring a lawyer but by using ChatGPT!

According to a report by Oddity Central, this all started when 23-year-old Kenzhebek Ismailov was driving his mother to a hospital when the vehicle in front of him came to a stop for no apparent reason, obstructing the single-lane road. After waiting for a while, he decided to drive around the stopped vehicle by using the bus lane.

As a result, he received a traffic summons of 5,800 tenge (RM49).

Considering the urgency of the situation, as his mother needed to go to the hospital, he felt that the summons was unfair and decided to try and fight it by appealing, though his appeal was rejected.

Help me, ChatGPT!

Kenzhebek then decided to pursue a court case to get the traffic summons revoked and used ChatGPT to guide him through the whole process. He did not seek the help of an actual lawyer, as he could not afford to hire one.

Upon explaining the situation to ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot suggested that he pursue the matter in court and helped him write up a complaint. It also informed him not to accept any private settlements from the country’s transportation authorities and not to rush to pay the summons despite there being a deadline, as it would equate to guilt.

Despite having paid the summons already, he followed ChatGPT’s other instructions and went to court.

While there, the judge asked several questions, to which Kenzhebek used the speech synthesis function to read out answers provided by ChatGPT.

Considering how clear and logical these answers were, the judge ultimately ruled in Kenzhebek’s favour, and the summons was revoked!

Kenzhebek has since also filed a civil lawsuit against the traffic authorities to claim compensation for the summons as well as his wasted time.
